The hardware we use to host websites is another compelling reason to trust your site to Oakhosting.NET.
VPS Technology
We use VPS Technology. VPS standards for Virtual Private Server. That means a physical server is divided into a handful of virtual servers, each of which is given exclusive use of a certain amount of disk space, memory and processing power. We believe this gives us 3 significant advantages:
- Small servers: Instead of hosting 400 accounts on one server, we would keep our server to about 20. There aren't hundreds of customers all trying to use the server at the same time, but only a handful. This means that the scale of the sharing is smaller, and it's easier to spot if one account is slowing everybody else down and then to help them resolve this.
- Security: With a large server, with lots of accounts, one account being compromised could affect everybody else. With a VPS setup, this is much less likely, because our VPS is totally isolated from the others on the same physical machine.
- Scalability: Our upstream provider is able to allocate us extra memory, disk-space or bandwidth as we need it. There is no need to buy a new physical server just to increase the memory we have available. This means we can grow as the number of customers grow, without disruption or downtime.
All 3 of these advantages help us to achieve our two overarching goals: Reliability that is Affordable.
Data Centre
The server itself is located in the Colo4 facility in Dallas, Texas. You can read more about the data centre on their own website. Amongst many other things, the data centre features:
- Fully staffed around the clock, with physical access well secured
- Raised flooring, and a floor-layout designed to maximise the efficiency of the cooling system
- 11 MW of electric power, with automatic generator backup
- Heat and smoke detection and fire suppression
By locating in Texas, we avoid European hosting space, which is usually pricier for what you get. By staying away from the East Coast and the West Coast, we maintain good response times from both Europe and Asia.
Test Files
You are welcome to download a test file from our servers so you can experience download speed.
Offsite Security
Our backup server is located in Tampa, Florida, on a totally separate network. It is important that backup servers are not in the same physical location as the main servers, so that the backup server protects your data if the main server should go down.
When you sign up with us, we give you 2 different name servers you can use to tell visitors where to find your site. Unlike some hosts, those 2 nameservers are on physically distinct servers in different data centres, giving true failover redundancy. As well as hosting DNS in Colo4 in Texas, we also have DNS servers in Fremont, California.
